About Sophie Andersen
Sophie Andersen is a former professional ballet dancer turned Pilates and movement instructor, and the Movement Director at Richmond Balance. With 8 years of professional dance and 6 years of teaching, Sophie knows that the best exercise is the kind that makes you smile.
Background
Sophie grew up in Minneapolis, trained at the School of American Ballet in New York, and danced professionally with regional companies before a knee injury redirected her path. She discovered Pilates during rehabilitation and fell in love with teaching movement that heals rather than harms.
Areas of Expertise
- Pilates and functional movement
- Injury prevention and rehabilitation
- Joyful exercise for non-athletes

Philosophy
Sophie is fiercely opposed to punitive exercise culture. She writes for women who hate the gym, dread running, and feel like fitness isn't for them. Her approach: find movement that makes your body feel alive, not punished.
"Your body was made to move — but it was also made to enjoy moving."
